Today I have spent extra time quietly reminiscing about our sweet daughter-in law, Courtney. I didn’t know her as a little girl growing up learning to walk, talk, read, play the piano and many other events. But as Courtney walked into our lives in the spring of 2008, it was a blessing to get to know this very special young lady. She brought joy and fun to our family. When Courtney entered the room, she brought a magic to everyone in the room. Her smile was bright and genuine, and she cared deeply for others. The day Chad married Courtney he was so overwhelmed that he wept through his vows. Courtney was the answer to our prayers for Chad. We were thrilled
When Chad and Courtney were first married they had a full life, working and going to college and graduate school. In spite of their busy schedule, Courtney managed to include us in every step of their lives. This is not something that is the rule of thumb in today’s society, but Courtney was an exception to the rule. Being the mother of sons, I had heard the common quote “A son is a son ’til he gets a wife, but a daughter is a daughter all her life.” Apparently the reality of this quote means many families feel like they have lost their sons and have become outcasts. Well, nothing could have been further from the truth with Courtney. We were welcomed into the inner circle of their lives.
In October of 2011 we were once again had a new member (Charles Richard Phelps, IV) join our favorite club—“The Grandchild Club.” As usual, Courtney made each milestone of her pregnancy and Chase’s young life an event. We received phone calls, visits, and pictures to document their sweet family times. When Chad, Courtney, and Chase moved to Indianapolis in the 2012, we had the wonderful privilege of serving and worshiping alongside of them. Courtney was loved and appreciated by everyone from babies to teens to senior citizens. She loved people and people loved her. Not a day goes by that we don’t miss Courtney, but today our emotions and thoughts revolve around this special lady who complimented Chad and brought so much delight to our family. She celebrates today in a land where there are no more birthdays. For us it seems like a long time before we will see her, but for her it as if we will be together again tomorrow. (2 Peter 3:8 “. . .one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” ) And so today we can say, “See you tomorrow, Courtney.” Written by Linda Phelps (Courtney’s Mother-in-Law)
