Thank you, Ben. This is well thought out and articulated and needful.

Here is where Cindy’s go a bit astray in rule making.

Having been a Fundamentalist since 1990…I do understand my criticism.

As a fundamental Baptist, we did not practice mixed swimming. Is there something in the scriptures that forbids this? No.

Why did we have this rule? Simply, that rule and others were designed to keep people from sin.

Sometimes we forget or are not taught why we have rules. Our rules might very well become the means of righteousness. That would be wrong. We need to understand we cannot become more right with God than we already are at the moment one is saved. If others do not have your rules or standards…does not make them less right with God or you more right with God. Frankly, especially if they are not a member of your church, it is really none of your business on why they do not have your standards of conduct. If we judge them for that reason, are we not undermining the leadership of their pastors, their leaders if we judge them for not having our rules of conduct?

Rules, strict rules…it is not wrong to have them as long as there is understanding as to why.

One church I was a member of was considered a “KJVO or KJV Only Church.” It was preached and practiced. Had a good friend trying to go to the mission field as I was invited to a meeting with our pastors, a couple dacons, and the rep of the mission board my friend was working for. His wife answered a question as to when you do not understand something in the bible…what do you do? Ahe mentioned she would ask her husband but try to study a bit more on her own which included going to a NKJV edition of the bible because sometimes the problem was understanding the KJV. To my surprise, I did not know one of our deacons was ab Ruckmanite. A Ruckmanite is one who teaches if the person who led you to the Lord did not use the KJV, you were not saved because they used “corrupted seed”. Most in our church disagreed with this and saw this view as heretical and salvation by works. This deacon got on to them harshly and I spoke for them. Before doing that, went and got a copy of our doctrine and practice (two different documents) . I handed the deacon our doctrinal statement and asked where does it teach the KJV was the only valid bible? He looked and like many other doctrinal statements, our views on the bible only dealt with the originals…not a translated version. So next I gave him a copy in our practice and asked if he could explain to us where it instructs we are to use no other version at any time. Well, the practice was since there is a multitude of versions and translations, when doing work in a minor story where you represent the church…we use only the KJV in ministry to basically keep everyone on the same page of music. It said nothing if you were not in a ministry or what you should use in the privacy of my ur home.

Even though I held a KJVO view at the time, did not see where our doctrine or practice says nothing about what we used at home. I eventually mentioned that his view might be your standard but is not the standard of the church.

Since then, have given up that view though I still loved and used the KJV. It was never a big deal to me to point out when people did not use a KJV…unless they asked me about it. This happened in 1997-1998. A Ruckmanite is a person teaching the doctrine of Peter Ruckman. Some other errors with this view…the KJV was inspired like the originals and the KJV corrects the Hebrew and Greek…the Hebrew and Greek do not correct the KJV.

Interesting post I enjoyed read this
